Evolutionary Psychology

Published by Yumiko Yamaguchi on

Overview & Description: Evolutionary psychology examines human thoughts and behaviors from the lens of evolution. It posits that the way our minds are structured and function today is a result of evolutionary pressures faced by our ancestors. In essence, behaviors or mental processes that increased our ancestors’ chances of survival and reproduction would have been passed down through generations.

Principles of Evolutionary Psychology:

  • Natural Selection: Behaviors or cognitive processes that provided a survival or reproductive advantage would be more likely to be passed down.
  • Sexual Selection: Attributes or behaviors that increase the likelihood of attracting a mate would be selected for across generations.

Implications:

  • Understanding Behavior: Evolutionary psychology offers explanations for behaviors, from mate preferences to aggression.
  • Cultural Differences: While evolutionary pressures are universal, the resulting behaviors might manifest differently across cultures, offering a blend of nature and nurture.
