Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

Published by Yumiko Yamaguchi on

Overview & Description:

BDD is a mental disorder characterized by an obsessive focus on a perceived flaw or defect in one’s physical appearance. This perceived flaw might be minor or not observable to others.

Key Points:

  1. Perception vs. Reality: Those with BDD often see their flaw as significant and prominent, even if it’s minimal or non-existent to others.
  2. Behaviors: May include excessive mirror checking, excessive grooming, or even seeking multiple cosmetic procedures.
  3. Comorbidity: Often coexists with anxiety disorders, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Implications:

  1. Treatment: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has shown effectiveness in treating BDD.
  2. Awareness: Increasing understanding can lead to early detection and treatment.
